Passport

A passport is a globally recognised official travel document. It allows you to travel to any country in the world, if necessary after obtaining a visa.

A Belgian passport is valid for 7 years (5 years for minors).

Before your departure you should check External site which document is required for your destination country.

Frequent travellers can apply for a 66-page passport instead of the standard passport (34 pages). This is only possible under urgent procedure.

  • To have one's main residence on the territory of the City of Brussels
  • Have a valid identity card
  • Be of Belgian nationality

  • Applying for a passport: by appointment (except for applications under the urgent and super-urgent procedure), at the counter of the Administrative Centre of the City of Brussels or the liaison offices of Laeken, Louise and Neder-Over-Heembeek
  • Passport collection: without appointment, at the counter of the office where the application was submitted

  • Identity card
  • Old Belgian passport, if applicable, or police certificate of theft (in case of loss, the declaration is made at the counter)
  • No photo required, taken directly at the counter (except for children under 4 years old)

For the passport of a minor child:

  • 1 identity photo of the child under 4 years old (from 4 years old, the photo is taken directly at the counter)
  • Identity card of the parent accompanying the child and of the child aged 12 and over
  • Old Belgian passport, if applicable, or police certificate of theft (in case of loss, the declaration is made at the counter)

The presence of the child is required at the time of application but not at the time of collection.

The child must be accompanied by the parent with whom he or she is registered. Otherwise, this parent must give his or her written consent with a copy of both sides of his or her identity card to the other parent, who has not been stripped of parental authority.

If the child is under guardianship: the judgement proving that the guardian can apply for the child's passport.

  • Normal procedure: 90 euros (adult) or 60 euros (under 18)
  • Urgent procedure: 260 euros (adult) or 230 euros (under 18)
  • Super urgent procedure: 320 euros (adult) or 290 euros (under 18). This passport must be collected from the FPS Home Affairs, Rue des Colonies 11 - 1000 Brussels. It is possible to order the passport under the super urgent procedure directly from the FPS Home Affairs.
  • Renewal following a 2nd loss/theft of the Belgian passport in the last 36 months: 180 euros
  • Renewal following a 3rd loss/theft of a Belgian passport in the last 36 months: 260 euros
  • 66-page passport: 260 euro (adult) or 230 euro (under 18)

  • Normal procedure: 8 working days for delivery at the Administrative Centre and 10 working days for collection at a liaison office
  • Urgent procedure: 1 working day for an order placed before 3 pm or 2 working days for an order placed after 3 pm
  • Super urgent procedure: 4h30 for an order placed before 3:30 pm (the passport must be collected from the FPS Home Affairs, Rue des Colonies 11 - 1000 Brussels)

The passport must be collected within 90 days of its application, after which it will be destroyed. After destruction, a new application will have to be submitted for a fee.
