Vaccination

The vaccination of children against polio (infantile paralysis) is the only mandatory vaccination in Belgium. The vaccination should be done before the child is 18 months old. After the vaccination, the (polio) certificate must be handed over to the municipality.

Mandatory vaccine against polio

Vaccination against polio is done in several steps. After the last dose the doctor fills in the certificate that was given after the birth. This document, signed by the doctor, must be delivered to the Registry Office in the municipality where the parents live.

Recommended vaccines

More information about other recommended vaccinations is available at External site ONE (in French) or External site Kind en Gezin (in Dutch) or the family doctor. The administration of the vaccine can be done by both. The vaccinations of the ONE and Kind en Gezin are free.

If the child goes to a nursery managed by the French-language External site ONE (Office de la Naissance et de l'Enfance), in addition to polio, additional vaccinations are required.
