Belgian identity card

The eID is the electronic identity card issued to all Belgians over the age of 12.

Please note: due to high pressure on the renewal of identity cards and driving licences, deadlines for an appointment to apply for a card or driving licence are running up to 2 to 3 months.

The service does its best to regularly schedule new opportunities on appointments, so you are advised to check the website regularly if the appointment seems too far away.

Citizens who urgently need to apply for a card or driving licence due to theft of their documents can come on site and ask for an appointment at the reception desk.

Equipped with an electronic chip, this ID card allows you to:

  • prove your identity
  • access online services (MyBXL, Tax-on-web, numerous e-government applications)
  • sign documents electronically
  • travel within the European Union

  • Being Belgian
  • Being over 12 years old
  • Having your main residence on the territory of the City of Brussels

You must go in person to apply for and collect your identity card (for fingerprinting and verification).

  • Application for an identity card: only by appointment (except for applications under the very urgent procedure), at the counter of the Brucity Administrative Centre or at the liaison offices in Laeken, Louise, Neder-Over-Heembeek and Haren.
  • Collecting an identity card: without an appointment at the counter where the application was submitted, on receipt at home of the PIN code sent by the FPS Home Affairs.

We will call you to renew your identity card.
