Athénée des Pagodes extension

What is it about?

The City of Brussels is building an extension of the Athénée des Pagodes. Works started at the beginning of 2024.

This extension will be built on the current site of the Athénée Karel Buls, which will be relocated to a new building within the Dutch-language complex on the Avenue du Mutsaard.

Everything is designed with a view to sustainable development: the site is planned to be 'clean' and particularly water efficient. Particular attention is paid to waste, the choice of materials and structures has been made with regard to the environmental impact. Part of the materials recovered during the demolition will be recycled and/or transformed. The recovery of rainwater and the use of solar panels are also being planned.

Like all new buildings in the City, the site will also be 100% accessible to people with reduced mobility. The project promotes soft mobility thanks to a good connection with the sidewalks and cycle paths bordering the site. The number of bicycle spaces will be increased to around a hundred, recharging stations for electric bicycles will be installed as well.

What purpose?

This construction has been scheduled to continue increasing the capacity of the City's schools. The extension of nearly 4000m² (classrooms, sports hall and surroundings of the site) will increase the school population at the Athénée des Pagodes by 540 pupils, to reach a total population of 1,250 pupils.

The school will be fully integrated into the neighborhood. The sports hall and the refectory will be available to residents and neighborhood associations outside school hours.
