From 19 to 26 March 2023, at several places in Brussels.

During the Brussels Water Days, the water of Brussels will be in the spotlight for a week. These days invite the people of Brussels to rediscover their city along the water. The numerous activities are free and accessible to everyone. Schedule:

The City of Brussels organises several activities during the Brussels Water Days 2023:

Sign 'Here the sea begins'

The City of Brussels is to install 200 signs at sewers with the message Here begins the sea, don't throw anything in. The inauguration of the first sign will take place on 20 March at 10 am at the Place Emile Bockstael (in front of the Maison de la Création).

Programme:

  • demonstration of how to clean a sewer drain
  • inauguration of the first sign
  • breakfast and drink

Those who wish can also participate in a collective waste collection or installation of a temporary sign until 12:30 pm. The materials will be available on site.

Do not hesitate to contact the Cleaning Service to announce your presence at the inauguration and/or your participation in the cleaning/placement:

The purpose of these permanent signs is to make people aware of wastewater management, but also, and above all, to remind them that 'throwing away waste on land is also throwing it into the sea'.

Because, waste, solid or liquid (cigarette butts, medicines, wipes, cooking oil...), thrown down the drain, sink or toilet disrupts the proper functioning of treatment plants or sometimes even ends up directly in our waterways.

Unfortunately, the environmental consequences are unprecedented: floods, degradation of water quality, destruction of fauna and flora,... Hence the need for this awareness campaign.

The Sewer Museum will open its doors free of charge on Sunday 19 and 26 March, with lots of fun events (booking required). More info:

Tags with 'Ici commence la mer - Hier begint de zee' (The sea begins here) were placed next to sewers. The people of Brussels are thus made aware of the link between their sewage system and the sea. So do not throw waste into the sewer:
