The 'Chile Chico and the Versailles quarter' exhibition is the fruit of a collaborative archive by Ema Tytgat, bringing together images from private and public sources, shared for the first time.
What is 'Chile Chico'?
After 11 September 1973, hundreds of thousands of political exiles left Chile.
Some 2,000 of them found refuge in Belgium. 36 Chilean families have taken up residence in social housing in the Versailles quarter of Neder-Over-Heembeek.
'Chile Chico', or little Chile, is the name that exiled Chileans have given to this community.
Exhibition of photos and testimonies
In collaboration with neighbourhood associations and residents, this 'memorial factory' begins with the story of a diaspora and its arrival in a new country, then moves on to meet the new stories and family portraits of residents still living in the neighbourhood.
The exhibition shows:
- photos belonging to local families and associations
- a photographic report on the children of Chilean refugees in Chile Chico, taken by photographer Gilles Salvia in the summer of 1983
- audio-visual testimonies
When?
- From 19 September to 18 October 2024, from 10 am to 5 pm
- Vernissage on 19 September at 6:30 pm
