Immersion education at French-language primary schools

The City of Brussels continues to invest in multilingual education. At the start of the 2022-2023 school year, the primary schools Les Magnolias in Laeken and Baron Steens in the Marolles will offer immersion education in Dutch. The Athénée Adolphe Max will welcome a first secondary class with double immersion (Dutch and English).

What is immersion education?

Immersion education immerses children in a different language. The children do not learn the language through vocabulary lists and grammatical rules, but rather in a fun and informal way. Without forcing them, they learn to speak another language: they will naturally do that, stimulated by listening, repetition and multilingual activities.

In these immersion education classes, 2 teachers, one French-speaking and the other Dutch-speaking, will work closely together to enable the child to learn both languages.

Bachelor's degree in bilingual teaching

In higher education (at the External site Haute Ecole Francisco Ferrer), a bachelor's degree in bilingual teaching has already been launched, in collaboration with the Erasmushogeschool Brussel. With this new field of study, more teachers will be available who can meet the challenge of bilingualism and multilingualism in the schools of Brussels.

Double immersion education (Dutch and English)

From the 2022-2023 school year, the Athénée Adolphe Max will welcome a first secondary class with double immersion (Dutch and English). The City of Brussels has chosen the Athénée Adolphe Max to become the first secondary school to offer this double immersion education Dutch-English in Brussels.
