Euthanasia (advance declaration)

Any person capable of expressing his or her will may draw up an advance declaration of euthanasia (living will) so that, should he or she become incapable of communicating their wishes, a doctor may carry out euthanasia in accordance with the conditions and procedure laid down by law.

You can register this declaration with the local authorities in the FPS Public Health database which is accessible to doctors.

The declaration must be co-signed, on the same date, by two witnesses of the age of legal majority, at least one of whom must have no material interest in the death, and may potentially also be witnessed by other trusted persons, as long as they have reached the age of majority.

As of 2 April 2020, advance declarations of euthanasia are of an unlimited duration. Declarations registered before this date remain valid for 5 years and are subject to renewal.
