Nelson Mandela sports centre inaugurated
The Nelson Mandela Sports Centre in Neder-Over-Heembeek was inaugurated on Wednesday 11 October 2017. This new sports venue, part of the Petit Chemin Vert Sports Centre, is mainly intended for rugby and football.
The outdated building along the Rue de Ransbeek, originally intended for 2 tennis courts and 2 non-homologated minifootball fields, was demolished to make way for the Nelson Mandela Centre.
Infrastructure
The building consists of two floors:
Ground floor
- a stand with 750 seats
- 8 modular administrative rooms for the sports clubs
- 8 group dressing rooms, 2 of which are equipped for persons with reduced mobility and 2 changing rooms equipped for children, from which the sports grounds are easily accessible
- 2 dressing rooms for referees
- a first-aid room
- 8 storage spaces for sports clubs
- a number of storage and technical facilities
- sanitary facilities
First floor
- a gallery where spectators can stand up and walk during matches
- a 400m2 modular multifunctional room with bar and kitchen (directly connected to the gallery)
- an administrative room with a meeting room, a modular office of 57 m2 and a number of storage spaces
- public toilets
Improved accessibility
In order to make the new building easier to reach, an area is being created with a kiss & ride zone and parking spaces for bicycles, persons with reduced mobility and buses. This gives a direct and secure access to the sports centre.
