Adjustment of the Pentagon residential area

Since Tuesday 1 September 2020, the Pentagon (city centre) is divided into different residential areas where quality of life and safety are priorities and where the maximum speed of 20 km/h is maintained.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the City of Brussels decided to convert the Pentagon into a residential area with effect from 11 May. In this way, the city created more space to respect the physical distance rules. The City of Brussels has decided to adjust this temporary measure in order to be better suited to residents and traders, but also commuters, visitors, customers,...

What is a residential area?

  • Pedestrians are allowed to use the full width of the public road, not just the pedestrian paths.
  • Traffic is permitted, with a maximum speed of 20 km/h to ensure pedestrian priority and cyclist safety.
  • Existing pedestrian zones retain their status as a pedestrian zone.
