Sculpted tree at the cemetery of Laeken

A sculpted tree watches over the graves of the Laeken Cemetery. At the initiative of the City of Brussels, artist Anton Klijnsmit portrayed the cycle of life and death on the dead tree.

Over the years, the dead tree grew amidst the historic tombs and could not be removed without damaging the graves. Therefore, the City launched a project call to transform the tree into a monument.

The Dutch artist Anton Klijnsmit, who makes wood sculptures, was awarded the assignment. He portrayed the cycle of life and death on a matter that is ephemeral as the wood will dissolve to eventually disappear.
