Call for an artistic intervention at the Square Lumumba

The City of Brussels is launching a call for projects for an artistic intervention (temporary or permanent) at the Square Lumumba. Candidates can submit a file until 28 May 2022.

This call for an artistic intervention on the Square Lumumba fits within the ambition of the City of Brussels to decolonize public space. A first step was taken with the naming of the Square Patrice Lumumba in 2018.

In the first place, the artistic intervention should lead the public to question the colonial issue in a constructive and innovative way. For example, the project can highlight the life, work and/or context of Lumumba's struggle. But the artistic intervention can also pay tribute to the victims of colonization or mention the female resistance during this period.

Subsequently, the City of Brussels hopes to give the space more identity with the work, taking into account the use of the square and its geographical and socio-cultural characteristics. This aspect is important since the site lacks substance and demarcation. An artistic project, even a temporary one, can touch people permanently and leave a trace in the collective memory.

An artist or artist collective that performs visual arts, performances and/or installations in situ.

  • A portfolio highlighting the artist's fields of research through up to 3 relevant projects related to this call
