Triangle school quarter

The Triangle quarter has no less than 6 schools and 3 nurseries. This means that a large number of children travel to and from school every day. The City of Brussels wants to make these journeys safe and less disruptive to the neighbourhood. The new traffic scheme started on 15 May 2023. The evaluation is ongoing.

In collaboration with the study office, the City has developed various measures and interventions to make the Triangle quarter a car-free school quarter within the framework of a new traffic plan. A car-free school quarter is one where children and young people who walk or cycle to school can do so safely and where the traffic flow is adapted to them.

The new measures are intended to reduce through-traffic in the area and to ensure that motorists observe the speed limits. The aim is also to use the modified traffic flow to encourage parents and children who are able to do so to get to school actively.

The area is very well served by public transport (bus, tram or metro). We are also making the last few metres of the journey more comfortable for the thousands of pupils and parents who already come by public transport. The Place Marsupilami, for example, will become quieter and safer for schoolchildren. The residents of the area will also benefit. A calmer school quarter guarantees healthier air and therefore fewer respiratory problems in the short and long term, not only for the children and young people, but also for the residents.

What is changing in the quarter?

These measures and interventions are as follows:

  • The introduction of one-way streets and compulsory right turns leads to a loop plan that limits through-traffic in the district (the one-way street on the section of the Rue Stevens-Delannoy between the Place du Marsupilami and the Rue du Cloître will be implemented in a later phase. The same applies to the compulsory right turn at the exit of the Place Saint-Lambert).
  • Establishment of 4 Kiss & Ride zones on the edge of the neighbourhood to encourage parents who drop off their children by car to park outside the neighbourhood and walk the last few metres to school.
  • Raising awareness among parents in collaboration with schools
  • Marking of bicycle lanes in one-way streets
  • Installation of traffic brakes to prevent speeding, as part of surveillance
  • Adaptation of the traffic lights at the Sterckx-Houba de Strooper intersection
  • Renovation of the Rue du Cloître (in 2024)

Kiss & Ride zones

Parents who drive to school are invited to use one of the 4 'Kiss and Ride' zones (see map) whenever possible. In the Kiss and Ride zone, you are allowed to park for free for 15 minutes. This is enough time to get your daughter or son to and from school safely. By using the Kiss and Ride, you contribute to a safe, healthy and serene approach to school.

  • Kiss & Ride Sobieski is accessible to cars coming from the Avenue des Ebéniers and the Boulevard du Centenaire.
  • Kiss & Ride Union belge is accessible to motorists coming from both sides of the Avenue Houba de Strooper.
  • Kiss & Ride Houba-Reper Vreven is accessible from both sides of the Avenue Houba de Strooper. If you are coming from the Ring, please make a quarter turn via the square at the Carrefour express.
  • Kiss & Ride Houba-Sterckx is accessible to motorists coming from Bockstael.

Let's measure the traffic together

After the implementation, a monitoring is planned to follow the implementation and later an evaluation will be done. If you are interested in participating in the monitoring, please register your interest via the e-mail address below.

The City would like to know how many cars, pedestrians and cyclists will move in your street after the implementation of the school quarter. If you would like to participate in this monitoring and evaluation, for example by placing a traffic counter in your window, please contact: urb.mobilite@brucity.be.
