Since 1 August 2025, all residents in Brussels are subject to a total ban on the use of pesticides (such as weed killers) on private property.
Only approved 'low-risk' products are still permitted. These include certain:
- slug pellets (caution advised for children and pets)
- fungicides against fungal diseases
- products that stimulate the natural defence of plants against diseases
What are the alternatives to pesticides?
It is perfectly possible to avoid pesticides by using natural solutions. Visit External siterenature.brussels to discover methods that are safe for you, your children, your pets, wildlife and the planet.

Better for the environment and your health
With this measure, the Brussels-Capital Region is continuing its policy of making our living environment healthier for everyone through a 'zero pesticide' approach. Pesticides are harmful to the health of the population and the environment.
For more than 10 years, the government has taken strong measures to stop the use of weed killers on roads, in parks and public gardens, in cemeteries, hospitals, schools,... This also applies to the Department of Green and Public Spaces of the City of Brussels, which has not used these products for more than a decade.
Many citizens have also made this choice for their health and the environment. Now it is a legal obligation. Nowhere on the territory (in private gardens or co-owned properties, green spaces of companies,...) are people allowed to use pesticides anymore.
