Dead animals

What to do when you have found a dead animal on the territory of the City of Brussels (1000, 1020, 1120, 1130)? Different instructions apply to other municipalities.

Weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm

Contact the Disinfection Unit of the City of Brussels: 02 274 16 85.

The animal will be removed by the City services and given to an approved organisation for its disposal in the best conditions.

At the weekend or in the evening after 4 pm

Contact the emergency services at 112 or the police at 101. The animal will be given to an approved organisation for its disposal in the best conditions.

Have you found a dead animal in your garden or on your balcony? The best practice, and the safest in terms of hygiene, is to contact a rendering company that you hire to collect the corpse.

If it's a ringed bird, and taking the necessary hygiene precautions, report it to External site BeBirds. This data is very useful for studying species (migration, movements, population,...).

Pigeons can be vectors of disease, and some of these diseases are directly transmissible to humans. We must therefore take care to guard against these risks, but without exaggerating them: basic rules of hygiene are sufficient (avoid direct contact with birds and their droppings and, if unavoidable, wash your hands before putting them in your mouth).

Cases of avian flu are occasionally detected in certain parks in Brussels. For your safety, follow the instructions:
