Gender change registration
Under certain conditions, it is possible for people who have the conviction that the gender mentioned in their birth certificate does not correspond to their intimately experienced gender identity to make a declaration of this conviction to the Civil Registrar.
- To have one's main residence on the territory of the City of Brussels
- Be Belgian, be a foreigner legally residing in Belgium
- Be of age or an emancipated minor or a minor of 16 or 17
From 1 January 2024, Belgians living abroad must go to their last commune of residence in Belgium or, failing that, to the City of Brussels.
The procedure consists of several stages:
- Send all the documents required to analyse the application by e-mail: analyse@brucity.be
- First appearance, by appointment, at the Brucity Administrative Centre: declaration before the representative of the Civil Registrar, who submits the file to the Public Prosecutor's Office.
- Second appearance, by appointment, at the Brucity Administrative Centre counter: appearance to draw up the sex registration amendment deed.
For minors aged 16 or 17, the presence of a parent or legal guardian is required when appearing before the Registrar.
If you can't move to Brussels for this procedure you can ask for a special authorisation made by a qualified authority.

- For minors aged 16 or 17, the child psychiatrist's certificate (DOCX, 15.85 KB)
Free of charge
The procedure involves several stages. The 2nd appearance is scheduled between 3 and 6 months after the 1st.
