Héliport-Anvers project - Reconstruction of the Millénaire community centre

What is it about?

The North Quarter is undergoing a major transformation, marked by numerous renovation and urban planning projects. This development is attracting significant private and public investment. Housing is being built along the canal, office complexes are being renovated, major facilities are being created, and parks and public spaces are being developed, bringing many new residents to the area.

Millénaire community centre

This project is part of the Héliport-Antwerpen sustainable district contract (2021-2025).

Located a stone's throw from the Gare du Nord train station, in the centre of the Foyer Laekenois esplanade, the dilapidated Millénaire community centre is to be rebuilt and relocated along Avenue de l'Héliport by the City of Brussels.

This new location will enable the Millénaire community centre to meet the needs of the neighbourhood and the Foyer Laekenois esplanade, depending on the activities that will be carried out there. The façade of the community centre, facing the street, will strengthen the relationship with the new forecourt of the Klavertjevier primary school. A staircase will be added to the new facility to improve the connection between the forecourt and the Foyer Laekenois esplanade.

The range of activities on offer at the new community centre will be expanded and its opening hours extended into the evening, to accommodate meetings of local residents and associations.

The demolition of the current building will free up around 680m² of space on the esplanade, which can be converted for other uses at a later date.

What purpose?

This project meets the following ambitions and objectives:

  • To streamline the management and use of municipal sites by applying the concept of chrono-urbanism (extending opening hours and evening accessibility)
  • To prioritise the re-concentration of the city's facilities and services within multi-purpose, shared neighbourhood facilities hubs
  • To address the lack of public facilities
  • To mobilise and equip municipal properties with urban agricultural facilities (vegetable gardens/greenhouses/chicken coops)
  • To transform municipal and public buildings into key players in improving the urban climate
