Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odourless and deadly gas. Every year, it causes more than 120 poisonings in Brussels. How do you prevent CO poisoning?

To counter this silent killer, Sibelga, the Poison Control Centre and the Brussels Fire Brigade have launched a large-scale External siteawareness campaign.

Sources of carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is released during incomplete combustion of fuels such as gas, petroleum or coal. Poisonings are mainly due to heating appliances, cookers, chimneys or boilers that are poorly maintained. Or still due to a poorly drawn chimney or lack of ventilation in rooms.

A fatal poisoning

Symptoms of CO poisoning include: headache, nausea, dizziness and, in severe cases, victims lose consciousness, possibly resulting in death. In case of suspicious symptoms, it is imperative to call 112 immediately.

Precautionary measures?

Take some precautions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Ensure a supply of fresh air
  • Have your appliances installed by a professional
  • Regularly maintain your appliances
  • Do not leave your appliances running for too long
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector
