How to prevent repair scams?

Bad luck at home and need an urgent repair? Be smarter than dishonest repairers.

A water leak, a blocked toilet or a sudden power cut: repairs like these can't wait. Unfortunately, not every repairer is equally reliable. Some charge excessive fees or deliver substandard work.

How to recognise a dishonest repairer?

Be extra vigilant if you notice any of the following signs:

  • extremely low prices or vague 'from' prices
  • no clear information about the total cost
  • pressure to decide or pay immediately
  • unclear documents or blank work orders
  • no or poor online information, recently created websites, no address

Tips before having a repair carried out

  • Always ask for a written estimate in advance.
  • Ask about all costs on the telephone.
  • Be extra vigilant about low or 'from' prices.
