What is it about?
The North Quarter is undergoing a major transformation, marked by numerous renovation and urban planning projects. This development is attracting significant private and public investment. Housing is being built along the canal, office complexes are being renovated, major facilities are being created, and parks and public spaces are being developed, bringing many new residents to the area.
This project is part of the Héliport-Antwerpen sustainable district contract (2021-2025).
Just a stone's throw from the Gare du Nord train station, the City of Brussels is launching a project to transform a plot of land that will include a 56-place nursery and around ten public housing units of various types.
The project involves demolishing the old, dilapidated nursery building, which currently accommodates 48 children, and constructing a new mixed-use building. Two classrooms from the Klavertjevier school, located on the same plot of land, will be moved to form part of the extension to the neighbouring school of the same name.
The future building, oriented perpendicularly to the neighbouring streets, will create a public passageway between Avenue de l'Héliport and Allée Verte. This new road breaks up the length of the block and grants easier access to the canal. Located in a flood zone, the project will pay particular attention to rainwater management on the plot.
What purpose?
This project meets the following ambitions and objectives:
- To strengthen the social mix by increasing supply of affordable housing and developing provision of local amenities to meet the needs of future residents
- To prioritise the re-concentration of the city's facilities and services within multi-purpose, shared neighbourhood facilities hubs
- To address the lack of childcare facilities for young children
- To ensure affordable housing for all
- To transform municipal and public buildings into key players in improving the urban climate
- To disconnect as many large-scale sites as possible from the sewer system and increase infiltration, storage, recovery and soil permeability systems
- To continue the development of the first Positive Energy District (PED) in the North Quarter
