Expand BiodiverCity, an initiative of the Climate Department, is currently implementing an action plan to strengthen urban biodiversity. Nest boxes for birds have already been installed in several schools in the city.

To ensure that this runs smoothly and in the best possible way, the Climate Service is working together with the External siteMoineaux et Biodiversité association and the experienced ornithologist Erik Etienne.

Nest boxes for sparrows, swifts, tits,...

Each nesting box installed is given a unique number (BXL-000) so that it can be monitored over time. To date, around 50 nesting boxes have been installed, specifically to welcome sparrows, swifts, tits and starlings.

Why install nesting boxes in Brussels?

Natural nesting sites are scarce in cities, and anyone who wants to attract birds in a sustainable way must offer them not only shelter but also food.

That is why planting grasses, native vegetation that attracts insects, or climbing plants is also given every attention in order to enrich the fauna in Brussels.
