'Surrounded by Criminals', a photo exhibition by Nicolas Wieërs, invites you to delve into the unknown world of the 'Vory v Zakone', the 'thieves in law' of the former Soviet Union.
'Surrounded by Criminals' originated in Moldova, where Belgian photographer and video artist Nicolas Wieërs, also founder of the Balkan Trafik festival, immersed himself for years in the world of this former criminal brotherhood.
In Chișinău and Tiraspol, he built up a relationship of trust with these men, giving him exceptional access to a closed community. Their tattoos, signs of solidarity and hierarchy, form a living archive that preserves the memory of a clandestine world that is about to disappear.
Different exhibition venues highlight different aspects of the project. The majority of the exhibition is on display in the Agora Hall of the Bourse.
