Change of surname

Are you experiencing difficulties with your surname? Under certain conditions, you can choose a new family name once in your life.

Conditions for changing your surname:

  1. Nationality or status: you must be Belgian, a recognised refugee or stateless person
  2. Age requirements: you must be an adult or an emancipated minor
  3. Residence: you must live in Brussels, or Brussels must be your last municipality of residence if you live abroad, or never have lived in Belgium
  4. Single change: you can only change your surname once in your life
  5. Choice of new name: you can choose your new surname from the following options:
    • Your father's surname
    • Your mother's surname
    • A combination of the two names
    • The name of your adoptive parent, either alone or combined with that of another parent

Please note: if your children have your surname, the change will be automatic for children under 12 years. If your children are over 12, the change is not automatic and their consent will be required beforehand.
