Since 1 July 2019, the distribution and use of single-use plastic has been banned at events organised in public spaces within the City of Brussels. This measure aims to drastically reduce the waste produced during events and to improve clean public areas.
The ban applies notably, but not exclusively, to: straws, disposable food containers, packaging for ready-to-eat meals, cutlery, stirrers, cups,...
Street trading is not affected by this ban, unless it takes place within the perimeter of an event held in a public space, whether organised by the City, a non-profit organisation, a municipal service, or a third party with permission.
Failure to comply with this ban may result in:
- An administrative fine under the law of 24 June 2013 on municipal administrative sanctions
- Withdrawal of the event permit
- Exclusion of a vendor or business from the event area
The City of Brussels wants to support organisers - particularly small and medium-sized non-profit events - in transitioning toward more sustainable practices.
A lending or rental system for reusable containers (cups, plates, cutlery,...) is available via the Rock the City non-profit association, with possible financial support depending on the case:
