Versailles project - Construction of a multi-purpose facility

What is it about?

This project is part of the Versailles district contract, an action plan agreed between the Brussels-Capital regional authority and the City of Brussels, aimed at improving the living environment of a poorer neighbourhood through public space, property and socio-economic projects. It is being carried out with the support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Project Versailles

The City of Brussels is planning to create a multi-purpose local facility on the block between Avenue de Versailles and Rue de Beyseghem. The project will offer a wide range of services and facilities designed to meet the diverse needs of the local population and promote vibrant and inclusive community life.

The design of this project embodies above all the idea championed by the residents of Neder-Over-Heembeek for employment, aimed at creating an attractive place to facilitate contact between employers and jobseekers. It also aims to respond to various demands, in particular the creation of shared spaces for associations, a user-friendly area accessible to everyone, a sports facility and a new space for the children's centre, currently located in a cramped and temporary space.

This local facilities hub will offer:

  • An employment centre including the services of a central employment office and a digital space
  • A parenting support centre including a children's centre and a family planning centre
  • A sports centre consisting of a boxing gym and a dojo for a variety of activities
  • A community and reception centre with shared rooms and a cafeteria/community kitchen available to  community groups and local residents.

Thanks to the diversity of its functions, this facility caters for all community categories: children, young people, adults and senior citizens. The space is designed to be vibrant, inclusive, intergenerational and gender-neutral, with a gender balance in mind. Although open to everyone, the project is aimed in particular at local residents, single-parent families and families on low incomes. The spaces will be accessible to people with disabilities or reduced mobility.

What purpose?

This project meets the following ambitions and objectives:

  • Boosting the supply of facilities and services around the public transport network and a pedestrian/cycle network, while preserving the existing landscape and biological attributes of Neder-Over-Heembeek
  • Rationalising the management and use of communal sites by applying the concept of chrono-urbanism
  • Addressing the lack of public facilities
  • Converting municipal and public buildings into key players in improving the urban climate
