What to do in case of a chemical accident?

The federal government has launched a campaign on the risk of Seveso companies: do you know what to do in the event of a chemical or industrial accident?

What is a Seveso company?

Seveso companies are companies where hazardous substances are produced, processed, treated, used or stored, for example refineries, petrochemical companies, chemical plants, petroleum depots or storage sites for explosive substances. Find the Seveso companies in your neighborhood:

In Belgium, every Seveso company is obliged to comply with strict regulations. There are also regular checks. Despite these strict safety measures, an accident could always occur. That is why it is important that you know what to do if something happens.

What can you do?

In the event of an accident in a Seveso company, hiding is the best way to protect oneself. Follow these 3 steps:

  • Go inside and stay inside
  • Close windows and doors
  • Listen to the media
