Access to a pedestrian zone
Access to a pedestrian zone (or pedestrian street) with a vehicle is possible via an access permit which has to be asked in advance.

A pedestrian zone is a set of streets reserved for pedestrians. In some cases it is possible to obtain a temporary or a permanent access (yard, move, exceptional deliveries, access to a private garage,...).

- permanent access: with an electronic badge which allows you to activate the pole and/or a pass (administrative document to be placed on the windscreen)
- temporary access: with a code and/or a pass (numeric code which enables to activate the disappearing poles)
- vehicles which have to load or unload: admitted between 4 am and 11 am (if indicated by the road marking)
- bicycles: if indicated by the road marking and if they are moving at walking pace
- taxis: if indicated by the road marking and with codes delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit or - for taxis of the Brussels Capital Region - a code delivered by the Regional taxi management
- priority vehicles with blue flashing light and siren: with a code delivered by the Traffic Service of the police
- vehicles of surveillance, control, maintenance of the zone and the vehicles for the collection of garbage: with an electronic badge delivered by the Road Works Department
- vehicles of public transport: with an electronic badge delivered by the Road Works Department
Permanent access
- owners of a private garage situated inside these zones: with a pass and/or an electronic badge delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit (at the rate of 2 passes by place)
- vehicles belonging to companies in these zones, when these vehicles are needed for deliveries and if this delivery is a main activity of these companies: with a badge and/or pass delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- trailers (carriages): with a pass and/or an electronic badge delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- pedicabs: with a pass and/or an electronic badge delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- medical care vehicles: with a pass and/or an electronic badge delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- people with reduced mobility and seniors older than 65 years living within the zone: with a pass and/or badge delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- fruit and vegetable growers and itinerant traders exercising a periodic or continuous activity within the zone: with a pass and/or an electronic badge delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
Temporary access
- customers who use a parking lot or garage belonging to a company: with a pass and/or code (for 24 hours) delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- people who marry at the City Hall: with a pass delivered by the Demography Department - Marriages Unit (this pass is only valid for access to the Grand-Place)
- drivers of hearses: with a pass and/or code delivered by the Demography Department - Deaths Unit
- drivers of a vehicle in the context of an event that is permitted by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen: with a pass and/or code delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- drivers of moving vans: with a pass and/or code delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- vehicles for performing works within these zones: with a pass and/or code delivered by the Demography Department - Traffic Unit
- state visits, order services, urgent and exceptional cases: with a code delivered by the Traffic Service of the police
- other unforeseen circumstances that require access to the pedestrian zone must be approved by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the City
- validity: the validity of the access permit is 2 years for the permanent accesses and variable for the temporary accesses.
- price: the passes are free. In case of loss or theft, new passes have to be paid (10 euro). The granting of the electronic badge costs 50 euro, a pledge which will be given back after the duration of the validity of 2 years (not in case of theft or loss).
