Access to a pedestrian zone

To access a pedestrian zone with your vehicle, you must obtain a permit in advance.

Only demands via:

A pedestrian zone is an area of streets that gives priority to pedestrians. In some cases, it is possible to obtain temporary or permanent access (construction site, move, exceptional deliveries, access to a private garage,...).

Permanent access: with license plate registration and/or code or badge that activates the disappearing pole and a permit (to be placed behind the windscreen).

Temporary access: with a code and a permit (numeric code which enables to activate the disappearing poles).

Vehicles which have to load or unload: admitted between 4 am and 11 am (if indicated by the road marking).

Bicycles: if indicated by the road marking and if they are moving at walking pace.

Taxis: if indicated by the road marking, taxis are allowed if they have a designated destination within the pedestrian zone for boarding or alighting people (with license plate registration by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone). For taxis based in the Brussels Capital Region, licence plate registration is done via the External siteTaxi sector.

Priority vehicles (ambulances, fire and police vehicles,...) as referred to in Article 37 of the Traffic Code, equipped with blue flashing lights and sound signals.

Supervision, control and maintenance vehicles of the pedestrian zone and waste collection vehicles.

Vehicles of public transport. 

Permanent access

Users of a regulated parking space or a private garage with registration of license plates and obtaining a code/badge + permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone - maximum 2 permits per parking space.
Required documents: identity card, registration certificate and proof of ownership or rental of the garage.

Vehicles of commercial enterprises whose headquarters are located in the pedestrian zone and whose main activity is delivery, with license plate registration and obtaining a code/badge + permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card, vehicle registration certificate, certificate from the Crossroads Bank describing the company's main activity and a document showing the company's place of operation.

Horse-drawn carriages with licence plate registration and obtaining a code/badge + permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card and permission from the Board of Mayor and Aldermen - Trade Service.

Bicycle taxis approved by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, with license plate registration and obtaining a code/badge + permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card and permission from the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

Drivers of vehicles used for medical activities or home care with an INAMI code, with licence plate registration and obtaining a code/badge + permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card, vehicle registration certificate and INAMI registration certificate.

Persons with reduced mobility and senior citizens over 65 years of age living in the pedestrian zone, with car registration and obtaining a code/badge + permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card, registration certificate, disability certificate and official people with reduced mobility card, if applicable.

Market stallholders and itinerant traders who conduct a periodic or permanent activity in the pedestrian zone and who have obtained prior authorisation from the Trade Service of the City of Brussels to use the public space, with license plate registration and obtaining a code/badge + permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card, vehicle registration certificate and Trade Service certificate.

Cases not covered above whose needs require access to the pedestrian zone must be specifically approved by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Brussels.

Temporary access

Customers using a parking space or garage allocated to an establishment. Establishments providing their customers with a garage or regulated parking space within the pedestrian zone must obtain a permit and code issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card, statutes of the business and proof of ownership or rental of the garage.

Persons marrying at the City Hall, including carriages, must obtain a permit issued by the Department of Citizen Affairs - Marriage Service.
Required documents: identity card and marriage card.
Please note: the Marriage Service only issues permits for access to the Grand Place.

Drivers of hearses must obtain a code and permit, issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: identity card and death certificate.

Drivers of vehicles as part of an event approved by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen or police must obtain a code and permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: registration certificate, permission from the Board - Events Service or the police.

Drivers of moving vans must obtain a code and permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: registration certificate and External siteOsiris permit.

Vehicles for works in the pedestrian zone must obtain a code and permit issued by the Department of Public and Green Spaces - Permit Management - Pedestrian Zone.
Required documents: registration certificate, police statement or External siteOsiris permit.

State visits, order services, urgent and exceptional cases must obtain a code, issued by the Traffic Police.

Validity: the validity of the access permit is 2 years renewable for the permanent accesses and variable for the temporary accesses.

Price: the passes are free. In case of loss or theft, new passes have to be paid (10 euros). 

The provision of electronic badges is subject to a refundable deposit of 50 euros, not refundable in case of theft or loss.
