Belgian nationality

Belgian nationality is the link that connects you, as a person, to the Belgian state and confers rights and duties.

There are 3 ways to become a Belgian citizen on application:

  • Acquiring: you are at least 18 years old
  • Granting: you are under 18 years old
  • Naturalisation: an exceptional favour granted to people over 18 years old or to emancipated people who submit a request for naturalisation to the Chamber of Representatives

If you lose your Belgian nationality, you can also make a declaration of regaining Belgian nationality to recover it if you meet certain conditions.

It is also possible, under certain conditions, to renounce Belgian nationality.

Specific conditions apply to each procedure. Applying does not mean that you will automatically obtain Belgian nationality.
