Biodegradable urns at the cemeteries

Since January 2022, the Brussels and Laeken cemeteries are able to bury more than 800 biodegradable urns. This biodegradable urn is a wood or cardboard urn that will be buried in front of a landscape of flowers and shrubs.

This innovative alternative to the classic urn or coffin offers many advantages:

  • less CO2 emissions
  • a more pleasant environment and a better view
  • an improvement in biodiversity

Landscape of flowers and shrubs

This waterproof urn containing the ashes of the deceased is buried in front of a landscape of shrubs, perennials, ferns and colorful flowers. A biodegradable urn also means less soil pollution. Because the urn is made of wood, cardboard or other biodegradable material, without chemical treatment.

Plate with the name of the deceased

A plate is provided by the City of Brussels so that the grieving family can add the name of the deceased, along with the date of birth and date of death. That plate is attached to the board of the column in Corten steel.
