Heat network in Neder-Over-Heembeek

Heat network in Neder-Over-Heembeek

The City of Brussels, Brussels-Energy and Sibelga are creating a heat network in Neder-Over-Heembeek. The aim is to offer more reliable, cleaner and more economical heating, initially for a few large buildings, and then for the wider area and local residents.

In Neder-Over-Heembeek, special pipes will soon be transporting local, constant heat to schools, nurseries, social housing, nursing homes and even the municipal swimming pool. This network uses the heat produced by the Brussels-Energy incinerator and is already used for the Docks Bruxsel and the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken.

Lower CO2 emissions

The idea is therefore to extend this network to Neder-Over-Heembeek to serve a large number of buildings with less pollution and lower CO2 emissions in the neighbourhood. The extension currently underway covers 3.7 km and more than 30 buildings will eventually be connected to it. Sibelga, the Brussels network operator, will take over its operation in 2027.

Works in progress

The works in progress extend the existing network from the Royal Greenhouses to the Rue de l'Ancre, via the Avenue de Versailles. Until March 2026, the main works will be concentrated around the Avenue de Versailles.

From early 2026 until January 2027, works are planned from the Avenue de Versailles southwards to the canal, passing by the Neder-Over-Heembeek swimming pool.
