URBiNAT Neder-Over-Heembeek

URBiNAT Neder-Over-Heembeek

URBiNAT is a European project that focuses on the regeneration and integration of underserved city districts in European cities. It is an intervention in the urban environment, thanks to 'nature-based' solutions applied in a participatory manner by the residents and associations of the neighbourhood.

The Versailles and Val Maria (Mariëndaal) districts in Neder-Over-Heembeek are currently part of this European project.

The URBiNAT project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement number 776783.

All results of the project are available on the External siteCordis platform.

What purpose?

From 2020 to 2023, an analysis of the area based on the organisation of participatory workshops has enabled an urban plan to be drawn up with a view to its implementation. The project includes the redevelopment of green spaces, proposals for more soft mobility, and social cohesion and social economy projects.

The main axis linking these is the 'green corridor' running from the Van Praet zone to Versailles, via the Neder-Over-Heembeek swimming pool.

Experiments and tools

The participatory process of URBiNAT has given rise to several pilot projects (non-exhaustive list):

A subjective cartography presenting the results of the shared analysis of the territory:

Field work tools: the 'ludomobile' (in collaboration with the External siteAMO of NOH), the 'mobile islands' (created by the External siteFrères Poulet), and the 'rolling object' (created by the HqT collective), to be (re)discovered in the district.

An awareness-raising card game, 'Cartosaga', presenting some of the projects underway in Neder-Over-Heembeek (by External siteSophie Le Grelle and Samuel Macsai).

Tailor-made support for cycling initiatives in Neder-Over-Heembeek in 2022, with a focus on equipping local women, and in particular the 'Vers'ailes' collective (by the External siteCollectif ipé and Cyclo).
