Vander Putten Stadium - Construction of housing and infrastructure

What is it about?

For a number of years, the Porte de Ninove area has been the subject of discussions and studies as part of the Urban Renewal Contract (CRU 5 – Heyvaert/Poincaré) and the Porte de Ninove Master Development Plan.

Vander Putten Stadium

The Parc de la Sennette project, led by Brussels Environment, aims to create an ecological, recreational and socially-focused plant pillar at the heart of the Heyvaert neighbourhood. This park will link the various green spaces and focal points of the neighbourhood, including Parc de la Rosée, Parc de la Porte de Ninove, Plaine de Liverpool, the abattoir area and the canal.

In 2023, the City of Brussels drew up a masterplan for the Vander Putten Stadium site, whose ageing sports facilities require a clear strategic framework for their future development.

The Property Management Agency (Régie Foncière) wishes to develop a project that places the coexistence of functions at the heart of the redevelopment of the site. The project thus includes:

  • The construction of 120 homes, divided into 72 social housing units and 48 average housing units, with a variety of types to attract a diversity of family compositions
  • The construction of an approved sports facility
  • Development of outdoor sports facilities
  • The construction of areas for logistics, a hall for celebrations and a space for events in Ninove Park, in partnership with Brussels Environment

One of the key objectives of this project is to open up the site to its urban environment, creating cohesion and fluid interaction between the stadium, Ninove Park and the neighbourhood. The redevelopment also aims to promote coexistence between public and private uses, ensuring balanced and inclusive use of the sites.

What purpose?

  • Guaranteeing affordable housing for everyone
  • Supporting a regional obligation establishing a minimum percentage of social housing and similar units per municipality
  • Rationalising the management and use of municipal sites by applying the concept of 'chrono-urbanism'
  • Responding to a lack of public facilities and sports infrastructure
  • Encouraging the reconcentration of the city's facilities and services within multi-purpose, shared neighbourhood facilities hubs
  • Converting municipal and public buildings into key players in improving the urban climate
  • Enhancing the heritage identity of the Pentagon's neighbourhoods while strengthening their resilience to the risks of heat islands, flooding and deterioration in air quality, by focusing on the buildings, the interior of the blocks and the public space
