Vander Putten project - Construction of a temporary sports hall

What is it about?

The City of Brussels plans to build a temporary sports hall on the Vander Putten Stadium site. Located near the Porte de Ninove park, the stadium currently includes various sports and recreational spaces, such as a playground, a skate park, and rooms used for sports and events. Some of these spaces, now underused and somewhat outdated, could be rethought to better meet current needs.

For several years, the site has been at the heart of various urban development projects aimed at renovating the Porte de Ninove neighborhood. It is part of the Heyvaert/Poincaré Urban Renewal Contract (CRU) 5 and the Porte de Ninove Master Development Plan (PAD). In 2023, the City of Brussels developed a masterplan to guide its future evolution.

The project for a temporary multi-sports hall at the Vander Putten Stadium, funded by STIB, aims to relocate sports activities from the Palais du Midi, due to the construction of the new metro line between Place Albert and Gare du Nord.

This project includes a large, regulation-size multi-purpose sports hall suited for activities like futsal and basketball, for both training and competition. In addition to hosting training sessions for schools and clubs, the hall will also be able to accommodate specific events, such as annual competitions. It will be equipped with retractable stands and outdoor recreational sports facilities, with a maximum capacity of up to 350 people.

The new sports hall will be built on the existing outdoor tennis courts, a largely impermeable surface. Although this hall is temporary, it will provide an immediate solution to meet local sports needs while waiting for the construction of permanent spaces.

What purpose?

This project meets the following ambitions and objectives:

  • Responding to a lack of sports infrastructure
  • Encouraging the reconcentration of the city's facilities and services within multi-purpose, shared neighbourhood facilities hubs
