Authorisation to plant flowers and plants in the street

Authorisation to plant flowers and plants in the street

Would you like to put some flowers in front of your house and make your street greener? The City of Brussels offers its support and help to create a small garden in a planter, at the foot of a tree or on the outer walls of your building.

This makes your street more aesthetically appealing, improves the quality of the air you breathe and encourages biodiversity in the city.

What types of project can you choose from?

The City of Brussels offers three types of project. It's up to you to choose the one that suits you best:

What does the local authority provide?

The City of Brussels will analyse feasibility (location, soil, safety,...), install the planters, prepare the pavement or attach the staking wires to the wall, depending on your chosen project.

If you choose the wall garden project, the City is responsible for digging the hole and supplying the climbing plant, which you can choose from a pre-determined list.

What do you need to supply?

If you're planting a planter garden or tree garden, it's up to you to choose and purchase your plants: flowers, plants, herbs or vegetables.

Feel free to check out the list of External sitenative plants to help you make your choice.

For all applications:

  • The project must be located within the City of Brussels
  • It must be located in a public space (pavement, square,...), not including parks and green spaces
  • You must agree to maintain your own garden: watering, pruning, replacing dead plants,...

Depending on the type of project:

Planter garden:

  • A minimum three-year commitment is required
  • We recommend involving several households in the project

Wall garden:

  • If you are a tenant, you must obtain permission from your landlord
  • If you are a co-owner, you must obtain the agreement of the other co-owners

Listed building

Projects involving the outer wall of a listed or safeguarded building will not be approved.

Tree planting

The commune is solely responsible for the management of trees in public spaces. If you would like to request a tree be planted, e-mail the address and a photo of the location to urb.ep-or@brucity.be.

Online via MyBXL:

  1. Log in using your identity card (eID) + PIN code or Itsme
  2. Select one of the three projects
  3. Fill in the form with a practical description of the project and attach the required photos and documents

Good to know!

Once you have submitted your application, the City will analyse the feasibility of the project before issuing the authorisation or proceeding with its implementation.

  • Photo of the project site
  • Written agreement from the owner/co-owners if you are a tenant and wish to install a climbing plant on a building wall

Free

You can submit your application at any time of the year.

The time it takes to receive authorisation depends on a number of factors:

  • the type of project chosen (planter, tree or wall)
  • the time required for the feasibility study (safety, available space,...)
  • weather conditions (especially for planting)
  • and the City's planting schedule

Once your project has been approved, the City will inform you of the next steps to be taken.
