CLIMATE: emergency planning for climate risks

CLIMATE: emergency planning for climate risks

The CLIMATE project is an Interreg Europe project that explores the climate related risks for the City of Brussels and 8 other European cities and regions.

Why prepare to face climate risks?

Climate forecasting for Belgium, published by the KMI or the IPCC, both show a clear increase of several natural risks for the City of Brussels. Heavy rainfall, heatwaves and drought will become more regular and more intense leading to an increased risk of flooding and fires.

That's why the City of Brussels wants to increase its detection and reaction capacities to better protect its population.

What results for the City of Brussels?

The CLIMATE project is allowing a complete analysis of the climate related risks and a common effort with regional and federal partners:

  • Participation in the regional flood emergency plan
  • Strengthening the City's adaptation efforts: greening, depaving or desealing, direct financial help for inhabitants in high risk areas with the flooding bonus
  • First heat emergency plan in Brussels
  • New tools to help protect the population: map with urban cooling islands
