Climate Plan - Resources and waste
On a regional scale, incinerated waste is responsible for 7% of direct greenhouse gas emissions. But if you take into account all the waste and the entire production chain, the figure is much higher.
The Climate Plan therefore aims to:
- reduce the volume of waste, because the waste that has the least negative impact is the waste that does not exist
- make better use of waste, by improving recycling through better sorting, and by composting bio-waste, to turn this waste into resources
Find out about all the ways you can reduce your waste and sort it more effectively:

Main objectives for resources and waste
Targets for 2030:
- 100% of the bio-waste produced by the city is recycled
- 10 minutes to get to a compost bin near you
- 90% of the waste collected during bulky waste collections is sorted
For the municipality:
- Installing a meso-compost to manage all the City's food waste
- Recovering and composting fallen leaves in public spaces
For all the people of Brussels:
- Develop a dense network of community/neighbourhood composts
- Install sorting bins in public spaces, parks and sports centres
- Install 2 dry toilets per year in the green spaces of the City
- Grant Zero Waste incentives (reusable containers in the catering industry, washable nappies, compost)
