The City of Brussels is launching a competition to design shade structures to cool down residents of Brussels in public spaces.
The summer of 2025 was very hot, continuing the series of record temperatures measured by the RMI since the beginning of the century. This is one of the visible signs of global warming. Heat is now becoming a major risk for Belgium's large cities.
Shade structures for public spaces
The City of Brussels is taking steps to adapt its territory and protect its inhabitants from high temperatures as much as possible. In this context, it is launching a design and architecture competition to design shade structures for public spaces.
The aim is to create an alternative to greening for those parts of the city where it is impossible to plant more trees. These shade structures will provide temporary refuge from the sun and heat for residents. The City is calling on the talent and creativity of students and residents of Brussels to design a new type of urban furniture that will become emblematic of Brussels.
How to participate?
Here are the competition rules:
- Regulations - Competition for the prototyping of shade structures (in French)
