Are you thinking of putting your end-of-life wishes in writing? You have the option, starting today, to draft an advance directive regarding euthanasia, an official document regulated by law. This declaration can be registered with your local municipal administration.
What you should know:
Any person capable of expressing their will may create an advance directive, provided certain conditions are met.
This directive allows a physician to carry out euthanasia in the event the person is no longer able to communicate their wishes.
Registration and validity:
- You can register your declaration with your municipal administration.
- It will be added to the Federal Public Health Service's database, which is accessible to physicians.
- The declaration remains valid indefinitely. You may modify or revoke it at any time.
For the declaration:
- To have one's main residence on the territory of the City of Brussels
- Have reached the age of legal majority or be an emancipated minor
- Be capable of expressing your own will
For registration:
- The declaration must be made in writing
- It must be co-signed on the same date by two adult witnesses, at least one of whom must have no material interest in your death
- You may also appoint one or more trusted persons, who must also be adults
