Non-European driving licence - Exchange

Do you have a valid driving licence issued by a recognised non-European country? In this case, you can drive in Belgium for a maximum of 185 days from the date of your registration. After this period, you must exchange your licence for a Belgian driving licence.

Make an appointment

You must exchange your non-European driving licence for a Belgian driving licence if you meet the following conditions:

You must have been registered in Belgium for at least 185 days
Your main residence must be located in the City of Brussels
You must be in possession of a valid driving licence issued by a External sitenon-European country recognised by Belgium and obtained before your registration in Belgium

These are the general requirements. Each application submitted to the City's departments is assessed on an individual basis. Special conditions may apply.

The procedure takes place in 2 steps:

1. Submit the exchange request

With an External siteappointment taken online via MyBXL, at the counter of the Brucity Administrative Centre or the liaison office of Laeken.

Your foreign licence will be sent to the police for authentication.

2. Exchange the licence

Once your licence is authenticated, the City of Brussels will inform you that you can proceed with the exchange. From that point, you can order your Belgian licence:

Application: with an External siteappointment taken online via MyBXL, at the counter of the Brucity Administrative Centre or the liaison office of Laeken.
Collection: without appointment, at the counter where the application was submitted.
