Passport for Belgians domiciled abroad

A passport is a globally recognised official travel document. It allows you to travel to any country in the world, if necessary after obtaining a visa.

If you are registered at a consular post, you can apply for a passport in several places:

  • At the consular post where you are registered
  • At any other Belgian consular post
  • At a local authority in Belgium:
    • last municipality of registration in Belgium
    • municipality of birth (if you have never lived in Belgium)
    • municipality of your choice (if you have never lived in Belgium and were not born in Belgium)

A Belgian passport is valid for 7 years (5 years for minors).

People who travel frequently can apply for a 66-page passport instead of the standard 34-page passport. This is only possible in urgent procedure.
