Municipal elections of 13 October 2024

The municipal elections will be held on Sunday 13 October 2024.

You will receive this letter in your letterbox at least 15 days before the election.

You did not receive your convocation letter for the 13 October 2024 elections? Or you have lost it?

You can request a duplicate of your convocation (electoral notice) from 7 October 2024.

The Elections desk will be open:

  • during normal office hours at Brucity
  • on Saturday 12 October from 8:30 am to 4 pm
  • on Sunday 13 October from 8 am to 4 pm

In accordance with Article 60 of the New Brussels Municipal Electoral Code: Voters who are not in possession of their invitation letter may be admitted to vote if their identity and status as a voter are recognised by the electoral office.

Non-Belgian citizens registered in the population register of a Belgian municipality can register on the electoral roll. 

Registration closed on 31 July 2024. You can register or deregister for the next elections, in 6 years, from the day after the election, so from 14 October 2024.

If you are unable to vote on election day, you have two options:

  • You can appoint a proxy (see 'Voting by proxy')
  • Or you can submit your reasons for absence to the justice of the peace in your judicial district, who will decide whether your reasons are justified

This mail, sent in connection with the elections, may be sent free of charge (free of postage), as long as the postage is marked 'Loi électorale'.

Electronic voting demonstration sessions will be held from 9:30 am till noon and from 2 pm to 4 pm (no prior registration required), on the following dates and at the following locations:

  • Tuesday 17 September 2024: Haren Community Centre (Rue de Cortenbach 11 - 1130 Brussels)
  • Wednesday 18 September 2024: North Pole Centre (Chaussée d'Anvers 208 - 1000 Brussels)
  • Thursday 19 September 2024: Brucity Administrative Centre (Rue des Halles 4 - 1000 Brussels)
  • Monday 23 September 2024: 'Les Églantines' Residence (Rue Saints-Pierre et Paul 15 - 1120 Brussels)
  • Tuesday 24 September 2024: De Buurtwinkel vzw (Place Anneessens 13 - 1000 Brussels)

These demonstrations are intended for all citizens of Brussels who wish to become familiar with the electronic voting system. Registration is not necessary.

Transport service

On 13 October 2024, a free transport service will be offered to people with reduced mobility who vote in the City of Brussels.

Who?

The operator Carry Services is specifically available to transport people with reduced mobility to their polling station free of charge. 

What?

  • Pick-up and drop-off (the driver will be waiting outside the polling station)
  • No proof or recognition of disability required

Candidate submissions

Notice to voters and candidates from the chairmen of the main electoral office (239.20 KB) (in French)

Paper nomination forms signed by voters can be handed in for verification at the Brucity counter during opening hours, and exceptionally on Friday 13 September until 3 pm.

Request for the voters' list

As soon as the voters' list has been drawn up, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen or the official designated by it will issue an electronic copy of the voters' list free of charge to persons who submit a written request and undertake in writing to submit a list of candidates for the municipal elections (N.C.E.C.B., article 13, § 1, paragraph 1).

Applicants can receive an electronic version of the voters' list (USB flash drive) at Brucity:

If the applicant does not submit a list of candidates, he or she may no longer use the voters' list, on pain of the criminal penalties laid down in article 197bis of the Electoral Code.

Notarial deed

Candidates may, under certain conditions mentioned below, request to appear on the list of candidates under a name other than their official identity:

  1. If the candidate chooses a forename other than the first forename appearing on their identity card, it must be one of the other forenames appearing on their identity card or birth certificate or the abbreviation of one of the forenames appearing on the birth certificate.
  2. Apart from the case mentioned in 1° of this paragraph, the main office may authorise the candidate to appear on the list of candidates under a surname or forename not included in the list of surnames and forenames appearing on his birth certificate or identity card.

In the latter case, the candidate must produce a notarial deed issued by the Mayor or notary establishing that the person is usually referred to by the surname or first name under which he or she intends to stand as a candidate.

How to apply?

From 19 August, go to the Electoral Affairs Service (Brucity) during office hours with 2 witnesses, with their identity cards.

Once the document has been signed by the Mayor, it will be made available for collection at Brucity.

Several election billboards are spread across the territory of the City of Brussels:

Only the City services are allowed to affix election posters on them for the parties - lists.

The election signs are approximately 1.12m wide and 1.80m high and their distribution on the municipal territory is determined by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

Posters will be received from 2 September 2024.

Some electors may be eligible for a financial contribution towards their travel expenses.

Are you travelling to the polling station by train? Then you can receive a free train ticket.

Do you use another means of transport? You can be reimbursed. Where? At the commune where you voted.

How to apply?

You can either take the train and receive a free ticket at the ticket office (together with the election notice letter, identity card or card for foreign nationals and a document: certificate from your employer, educational establishment or healthcare provider). To return by train, show your election notice letter stamped by the polling station.

Or you can use another means of transport:

On 13 October: you bring the External siteF2 form with you on polling day and ask the president of the polling station to sign it.

Before 13 January 2025, you claim your refund by e-mail to elections@brucity.be by sending:

  • the completed and signed F2 form
  • your letter of invitation stamped by the polling station
  • the transport ticket used
  • a certificate from your employer, educational establishment or healthcare provider

The amount of the reimbursement corresponds to the price of the train in 2nd class. The price is that applied by the SNCB on 13 October.
