Parental authorisation

When a minor travels abroad, either alone, accompanied by only one parent or by persons other than their parents, it is advisable to draw up a 'parental authorisation', attesting that the parents or the other parent have consented to the trip.

There are two different ways of obtaining a parental authorisation from the City of Brussels: in digital format or on paper.

There is no Belgian or international form or procedure setting out the rules for parental authorisation for travel by minors.

To avoid any unpleasant surprises, check which documents are required and their format (digital or paper) for children travelling alone or with just one parent with the embassy or consulate of your destination country and your airline.

  • Your main residence must be located in the City of Brussels
  • Digital format only: the child to whom the parental authorisation applies must be a member of the household of the parent making the online application

Digital format:

In this case, the document is signed electronically using an identity card (eID) + PIN code + card reader, following the steps below:

  1. Fill in the required information
  2. Sign electronically using your identity card
  3. The document will then be available for 90 days in digital format in the 'My documents' tab of your MyBXL personal account

Paper format:

In this case, the document is signed manually and obtained: without appointment, at the counter of the Brucity Administrative Centre or the liaison offices of Laeken, Louise, Neder-Over-Heembeek and Haren.

Brucity: peak hours at the counters without appointment
