Belgian driving licence - Full

A driving licence allows you to use a motor vehicle on public roads. Since 2013, the paper licence has been replaced by the bank card style driving licence, in line with the European Union model.

Please note: due to high pressure on the renewal of identity cards and driving licences, deadlines for an appointment to apply for a card or driving licence are running up to 2 to 3 months.

The service does its best to regularly schedule new opportunities on appointments, so you are advised to check the website regularly if the appointment seems too far away.

Citizens who urgently need to apply for a card or driving licence due to theft of their documents can come on site and ask for an appointment at the reception desk.

There are different categories of driving licence, depending on the type of vehicle being driven.

The validity of a driving licence varies according to category, but the maximum period is 10 years.

You must voluntarily request its renewal no later than 3 months before it expires.

For a first application for a full driving licence, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Your main residence must be located in the City of Brussels
  • You must be of the minimum age required for the category of driving licence
  • You must not be disqualified from driving
  • You must have passed the theory and practical tests

To renew an expiring driving licence, obtain a duplicate in the event of loss or theft, or replace an old paper model, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Your main residence must be located in the City of Brussels
  • You must not be disqualified from driving

These are the general requirements. Each application submitted to the City's departments is assessed on an individual basis. Special conditions may apply.

  • ID card or residence card
  • Old provisional licence / driving licence about to expire / old paper licence to be replaced. Where applicable, a police certificate of theft.

Where applicable:

  • Application form issued by the test centre if you have passed the practical driving test and wish to apply for your first full driving licence
  • Certificate of fitness to drive (External sitemodel VII or External sitemodel VIII) completed by your GP if you suffer from any impairment of functional ability due to illness, accident or other medical condition likely to affect your ability to drive a motor vehicle safely
  • One recent passport photo on a white background, if you no longer resemble the photo on your identity card or residence permit

The driving licence must be collected within 90 days of application, after which it will be destroyed. Once destroyed, a new application, subject to the same fees, must be submitted.
