Climate Plan - Mobility and public space

Climate Plan - Mobility and public space

The transport of people and goods is responsible for a quarter of the Region's greenhouse gas emissions. And traffic also has a very negative impact on health.

The Climate Plan provides the City of Brussels with a coherent framework that complements regional initiatives to:

  • encourage active mobility (cycling, walking) or shared mobility
  • redevelop public spaces to make them places to live

Main objectives for mobility

Targets for 2030:

  • 15% of journeys within the City of Brussels are made by bicycle
  • 30% of journeys within the City of Brussels are made on foot
  • 30% of journeys within the City of Brussels are made by public transport, which provides an efficient service throughout the area and keeps traffic flowing smoothly

For all the people of Brussels:

  • Increasing the space and comfort for walking with renovated and widened pavements, new meeting and pedestrian zones and making spaces 100% accessible to people with reduced mobility
  • Increasing the capacity for secure cycle parking, both in public car parks and in residential areas
