Green bonuses

The City of Brussels gives bonuses to its inhabitants to encourage them in their efforts to ensure a better management of household waste, for greening their neighborhood or controlling their energy and water consumption. Nine bonuses are available now.

In the context of its Climate Plan, the City also grants private individuals and companies bonuses for greening roofs, installing solar boilers, making permeable soils, collecting rainwater or allowing it to infiltrate into the soil. These premiums are only granted for properties located on the territory of the City of Brussels (postal codes 1000, 1020, 1120, 1130).

These environmental bonuses will be granted within the limits of the available annual budget.

By composting organic waste at home, the inhabitant decreases about a third of the contents of his domestic garbage can. He can so avoid the transport of waste (reduction of CO2 emissions) and he produces a natural and free fertilizer.

The composting is within the reach of every owner of a garden, whatever the size of the garden. In the absence of a garden, the solution is vermicomposting (worm composting).

The amount of the municipal bonus is 75% of the purchase price of the compost bin, with a maximum of 50 euros per compost bin and per household.

For a worm composting bin, the amount of the bonus is fixed at 100% of the purchase price with a maximum of 100 euros per bin and per family.

Please fill in the application form and send it, with the necessary supporting documents and dated and signed, to the Eco Advice Unit. This has to be done within four months from the date of the purchase invoice of the compost bin.

The City of Brussels has a bonus for the planting of a climber on the facade of a house that is visible from the street.

A vine growing on the facade contributes to:

  • the protection against moisture of the facade
  • better thermal and sound insulation of the building
  • microclimate improvement: cooling and humidifying the air around the building
  • the air purification: collecting dust and pollutants through the leaves
  • the enrichment of biodiversity: food source and shelter for insects and birds
  • strengthening the 'Green Network'
  • beautifying the area
  • ...

The amount of the municipal contribution is limited to 75% of the amount of the works, based on invoices or supporting documents (maximum of 100 euro per building and per period of five years).

The granting of this bonus is governed by a municipal law which clarifies the plant species that are allowed as well as the grid and the appropriate place.

Please fill in the application form and send it, with the necessary supporting documents and dated and signed, to the Eco Advice Unit. This has to be done within four months after the end of the works.

For numerous applications, rainwater is a more attractive alternative for drinking water. Drinking water is not needed for tasks such as watering the garden, a vegetable garden or houseplants, or for the maintenance and cleaning of the house, the car, tools... Rainwater is also softer than tap water, and thus allows to use less maintenance products.

The City of Brussels offers a bonus for the purchase of a rainwater collector that has to be connected to a drain. This installation (ton, barrel,...) is intended for the collection and/or storage of rainwater fallen on a roof of a building situated on the territory of the City.

The rainwater collector has the advantage of being easy to install, without the intervention of a professional.

The amount of the municipal bonus is set at 75% of the purchase price of the rainwater collector with a maximum of 100 euros per collector per household. The accessories are not eligible for the calculation of the amount of the bonus.

Please fill in the application form and send it, with the necessary supporting documents and dated and signed, to the Eco Advice Unit. This has to be done within four months from the date of the purchase invoice of the rainwater collector.

  • filtration and biological purification of rainwater
  • improvement of microclimate: humidity control and reduction of the 'heat island effect'
  • improvement of air quality: absorption of dust, pollen and some pollutants
  • increasing the aesthetic character of the roof

The City of Brussels grants a bonus for the construction of a green roof on a building located on its territory.

The amount of the municipal bonus is set at:

  • 20 euros/m2 for extensive green roofs
  • 30 euros/m2 for intensive green roofs
  • 25 euros/m2 for green roofs with a thickness between that of an extensive roof and that of an intensive roof

Maximum 3,500.00 euros per building and per 5-year period. A minimum area of 2 m2 is required.

The amount is increased by 10% for works carried out by social economy companies, tailor-made companies or social integration companies.

The amount is increased by 20% for green roofs that are visible from at least 5 buildings.

A single premium is awarded per property and per 5-year period.

The intervention of the municipality may not be more than 100% of the investment.

This premium is subject to conditions, in particular technical conditions, which must be met by the beneficiaries and the installation.

On the one hand, the applicant must ascertain whether a planning permit is required for the installation of a green roof (for stability reasons, for raising the walls, waterproofing works,...). On the other hand, the applicant must examine whether the structure of the roof can support the weight of the green roof, including the additional weight after rain.

Please fill in the application form and send it to the Eco Advice Unit. This has to be done within 3 months after the end of the works.

It is possible to reduce the amount of the energy bill by reducing dependence on fossil fuels (fuel oil, gas) and by using alternative energy sources. Even with our climate, a solar water heater makes it possible to provide 60% of the energy required for the production of hot sanitary water in a home for free. In addition, there is a direct environmental benefit with such an installation through a reduction in atmospheric pollution and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The City of Brussels grants a premium for the purchase and placement of a solar water heater in homes located on its territory, with a corresponding minimum surface area of 2 m2 optical surface area of thermal solar panels.

The amount of the municipal bonus is set at 50% of the bonus awarded by Brussels Environment (with a maximum of 2,000 euros).

In the case of the construction, renovation or modification of different homes (apartment building, whole of single-family homes,...) by the same principal, the amount of the premium is equivalent to as many individual premiums as there are homes, with a maximum of 3 individual premiums.

The bonus is increased by 10% for works carried out by social economy companies, tailor-made companies or social integration companies.

The bonus is increased by 20% for the installations carried out in a building intended for rental (the owner is not domiciled in the building).

The increasing urbanization of the Brussels Region in the 20th century has led to a considerable mineralization and impermeability of the territory. Currents are vaulted, ponds and swamps have been drained and replenished to be built. As a result, water has gradually disappeared from the landscape. These elements played an important role in flood management by absorbing rising waters during heavy rain showers. For some years, some collectors have become so saturated during heavy rainfall, causing flooding in the City of Brussels.

The design of rainwater management facilities helps to limit the impact of water on the sewerage network and at the same time it helps to increase the value of the landscape and the environment.

The City of Brussels awards a bonus for the installation of a rainwater infiltration system connected to a drainpipe. That system can be constructed differently depending on the type. Infiltration pits are not eligible for the premium because they can cause pollution problems with the groundwater. Different systems can be combined (rain garden).

The systems installed with exotic invasive plants are not eligible for this premium. An indicative list of these plants is available on Alterias.

The amount of the municipal premium is set at 75% of the amount for the works with a maximum of 500 euros.

The premium is increased by 10% for works carried out by social economy companies, tailor-made companies or social integration companies.

The premium is increased by 10% for planting plants that are good for biodiversity (native plants, bee plants,...).

A single bonus is awarded per property and per 5-year period.

The intervention of the municipality may not be more than 100% of the investment.

The applicant must check whether a planning permit is required for the construction.

Please fill in the application form and send it to the Eco Advice Unit. This has to be done within 3 months after the end of the works.

The Brussels Region is a very densely built area. Rainwater flows on largely impermeable soils and ends up in the sewerage network. In the case of heavy rain showers, some collectors become saturated, which can lead to flooding. Permeable surfaces help to limit that risk.

The City of Brussels awards a bonus for making sites permeable. This premium aims to encourage the removal of impermeable ground cover (tiles with joints, concrete, asphalt...) and its replacement with permeable material (areas with full soil, gravel, grass tiles, small tiles without joints...) in order to allow rainwater to seep into the soil.

The permeable area must be at least 50% of the total initial area.

Systems with exotic invasive plants are not eligible for this premium. An indicative list of these plants is available on Alterias.

The amount of the municipal premium is set at 75% of the amount for the works with a maximum of 1,000.00 euros.

The premium is increased by 10% for works carried out by social economy companies, tailor-made companies or social integration companies.

The premium is increased by 10% for the construction of permeable zones with plants that are good for biodiversity (native plants, bee plants,...).

A single bonus is awarded per property and per 5-year period.

The intervention of the municipality may not be more than 100% of the investment.

Please fill in the application form and send it to the Eco Advice Unit. This has to be done within 4 months after the end of the works.
